First Day of Summer - Sumardagurinn fyrsti
Happy summer! Today is officially the first day of summer in Iceland (first Thursday after 18th of April). This is a national holiday in Iceland and is a day for adults to clean up the neighborhood, the scouts to parade and children to get face painted. Kids also often receive a first day of summer gift, a ball or some other outdoor summery toy.
Last night’s weather also indicates that this will be a good summer. Folklore generally says that if “sumar og vetur frjósa saman” or “summer and winter freeze together”, then it will be a good summer. This means that there is frost, the night before summer. The thickness of the ice on lakes is also an indicator to how thick the cream layer will be on fresh milk that year.
Even though this is officially the first day of summer, many consider it somewhat sarcastic as there typically is little sign of summer yet. But the day stems from the old Norse calendar which only had two seasons, summer and winter.

Clear skies over Iceland
Iceland is not exactly renowned for its good weather. NASA actually felt it was newsworthy that they got a clear, cloudfree satellite shot of nearly all of Iceland. For more information read their very simplistic summary of Iceland (I thought NASA was run by smart people). A while  back I posted a satellite image from 2004 of snow covered Iceland in the winter.

Anonymous asked: what is the weather in iceland like during the summer? also what are the months where it stays light out all day? thanks :)

The weather in Iceland is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you are gonna get.

The average temperature in Reykjavík is roughly between 0-10°C. During the coldest months, December and January, the average is just below freezing, while the warmest months, July and August average just over 10°C. The hottest summer days we get are somewhere between 20-25°C. Today is an excellent summer day with 17°C, minimal wind and lots of sunshine. That said anything can happen. This year it snowed in both May and June in Reykjavík. It gets very windy and you can expect plenty of wind driven rain. If you plan to do some proper outdoor stuff (what Iceland is all about), then be prepared for everything.

It is more or less light outside all night all summer. The 21. of June is the longest day of the year and then you’ll see no difference between day and night. About a month before and a month after you’ll experience short periods of half dark which increases as you move further away from the 21. of June. The opposite occurs on the 21. of December with 24 hours of darkness.

Since the weather today is so great, I’m out of here and going skydiving.

It’s snowing in Reykjavík in June
