The traditional Icelandic ‘Skautbúningur’ dress.
Joseph Paul Gaimard was a French naturalist who visited Iceland in 1835 and 36. He led a French scientific exploration of Iceland and eventually published books with descriptions and pictures. The pictures are very accurate drawings that have lived on and provide a unique glimpse into early 19th century Iceland. The book can be read on Google Books: Voyage en Islande et au Groënland, Gaimard.
