One of the most difficult things when eating Hákarl is holding back the gag reflex caused by the stench. Don’t worry though, it doesn’t taste quite as bad as it smells. Do try it. At nammi.is you can buy shark and some Icelandic Brennivín to wash it down.

Whether you like it or not, you will have to taste shark when you go to Iceland. If you are worried about the taste, just make sure you wash it down with a shot of brennivín. Great video by National Geographic about the gruesome preparations of shark meat.

I’ve got some fermented Icelandic shark in my fridge and strong Brennivín in the freezer. It’s a great combo, just make sure you don’t eat and drink too much of it or you might end up burping shark and Brennivín for a few days.
