Night Time Rainbow at Skógafoss
I’ve often pointed out the eternal rainbow by Skógafoss in countless other pictures. However, this is the first time I see a night time rainbow by it. You can see that this image is taken at night, because it also sports a aurora borealis in the starry sky. I once camped right in front of the waterfall and tried to capture some night photos, but came nothing close to this. Stéphane Vetter however had great success when he traveled to Iceland this October and took many excellent photos such as this one.

He captured the photo with a very long exposure, thus catching the otherwise invisible spectrum of faint aurora and moon light in the waterfall’s spray. One of his other amazing photos is that of the aurora over Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon in Iceland. That photo was actually featured on the Daily Mail.

Northern lights over the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. This is an animation cut from this awesome video.

Most awesome northern lights video I’ve seen. This timelapse is taken at Jökulsárlón in Iceland.

Since about half of the pictures from Iceland circulating on tumblr are of the northern lights I usually don’t reblog them. However, this one I really like. The aurora isn’t that intense, but the old sheep hut gives it the edge.

Auroral Alert - tonight and tomorrow

According to the Geophysical Institute in Alaska:

Several Solar events have occurred and the disturbances should reach Earth sometime on the 17th or 18th of Feb.  Watch the short term auroral forecast for a 1 hour warning.  We would expect auroral index 4 or more.

Checking the forecast more precisely Iceland should be perfectly situated for this nights northern lights, directly under the aurora ring. If you can’t make it to Iceland in time but live far up north check out your local forecast and you might get a display.

This is a little second world war guard tower in Seltjarnarnes, Iceland. Luckily the war never came to Iceland but both the USA and the UK had an air and naval base on the island.

Taken in Seltjarnarnes a town adjacent with Reykjavík. You can walk out to the lighthouse just make sure to get back to the mainland before the tide comes in or you might have to spend a night out in the cold.

Reykjavik, Iceland. It’s amazing to think that there are such wondrous places on our planet.
