Vestmannaeyjar, the town on the small island of Heimaey. In 1973 a dormant volcano, Eldfell on the edge of town woke up the town with a firey show. All of the inhabitants were evacuated immediately and no one was killed. However the eruption went on for about half a year and half of the town was consumed by lava and the rest covered in ash.
Through some amazing human feats a group of brave men managed to divert the lava flow away from the harbor by pumping water on the red hot glowing lava. The town that relies solely on fishing was therefor able to rebuild itself and continue on with a new 700 meter high mountain in one of the outer neighborhoods.

Rough seas in Iceland. This video is of an Icelandic fishing trawler on it’s way into port in Vestmannaeyjar (The Westman Islands) on the south coast of Iceland. The port is renowned for some pretty rough waves.
