UFO clouds over Snæfellsjökull in Iceland
Snæfellsjökull is a glacier out on the Snæfellsnes peninsula on the west coast of Iceland. It is a much loved mountain in Iceland due to its beautiful volcanic cone lines. It is well visible from Reykjavík from where it appears to float on the ocean.
The glacier has always been linked with mystic powers and was chosen by Jules Verne as the starting point for his Journey to the Center of the Earth. It has also been a center of attention for UFO seekers from around the world. In 1991 UFO enthusiasts and international media flocked around the glacier in anticipation of an alien landing.
Perhaps clouds such as these lenticular altocumulus clouds in the photos below originally triggered these stories.

Nicest prison in the World?
This is the Kirkjufell mountain on the Snæfellsnes peninsula on the west coast of Iceland. The mountain is particularly photogenic from all angles as you can see in previously posted pics of Kirkjufell. Kirkjufell means “Church Mountain” a name probably derived more from its shape rather than the nearby buildings. The buildings you see in the upper left corner are part of the town Grundarfjörður, while the buildings on the right corner by the river bank are one of Iceland’s prisons.
The Icelandic population is tiny and by most standards the crime rate is minimal. However of course we have some bad apples and need a few prisons. Iceland has very few prisons and currently there is a waiting list. Yes, if you commit a crime in Iceland and are not considered an immediate threat, you have to wait your turn to go to jail…
The nicest jail to go to is Kvíabryggja, the jail by the river in the above photo. It is a minimum (maybe zero) security prison used for those who are not considered a flight risk (no bars or fences). The prison is actually a farm and inmates are expected to work on the farm.
A couple of fixie riding, sneaker wearing hipsters visited Iceland and made this cool video.

A great winter activity in Iceland is to go out to a sea cliff in stormy weather. Watching the waves batter the coastline and imagining the lands out in the distance is an excellent bad weather activity. This picture is taken of Lóndrangar on the Snæfellsnes peninsula on the west coast of Iceland. Much too many visitors drive past the peninsula and miss out on a lot of great places. I definitely recommend taking a couple of days to drive around the peninsula checking out places such as Hellnar (old fishing place), Lóndrangar (rock columns), Arnarstapi (cliffs, sea, birds), Búðir (luxury hotel - beautiful place), Snæfellsjökull glacier, Kirkjufell (peculiar mountain), Bjarnarhöfn (try some shark) and Stykkishólmur (wonderful town).

Wow this is a great picture. Kirkjufell mountain has only recently been discovered by photographers. So many awesome pictures of this mountain from various angles have appeared recently.
The mountain is just outside the town of Grundarfjörður on the Snæfellsnes peninsula on the west coast of Iceland. You can climb it if you are interested. The mountain is comprised of countless steps that you have to overcome. Each steep section is between a meter and a few meters high but some ropes have been strategically placed to help hikers out. Just be very careful and avoid it when it is wet. If you don’t want to climb the mountain you can just relax in the pool in Grundarfjörður.

This is Kirkjufell right by the small town of Grundarfjörður. Kirkjufell means Church-mountain hinting at it’s shape. You can see some pictures from friends of mine that hiked up there last summer. And another friend who took his grandson for a climb up.
Halló. I have many mountains for you to look at on your Inter-net. Here is a picture of my Kirkjufell. If you visit me, you can also look at it yourself, without the Inter-net.
See you soon,

Sunrise on Snæfellsjökull Glacier. Snæfellsjökull is a small but high glacier at the very tip of the Snæfellsnes peninsula on the west coast of Iceland. Many believe it has mythical powers and sometime in the 80’s odd people from all over the world flocked to it to witness an anticipated extraterrestrial landing. I guess the aliens backed off when they saw all the people.
This picture is from a cool set of photos of the sunrise on Snæfellsjökull. The pictures are taken by Gaëtan Priour a friend of my friend, María, who is on the photos. You can see many more pictures from Iceland on his photoblog.
Kirkjufell is a really great hike if you are out on the beautiful Snæfellsnes peninsula in west Iceland right by the town of Grundarfjörður. The hike is not for everyone as there is some scrambling involved.
