Island of the stranded preschoolers
This is the small island of Grótta. It is right on the very tip of Seltjarnarnes, a neighboring town of Reykjavík (right here to be precise). The birdlife in Grótta is great and I would recommend a visit. Most of the time you can walk out into the island along the sandy beach (flooded in this photo). Tides are predictable and if I remember correctly, there is a tidal chart by the path, so there is no reason to get stranded. Still there’s always somebody getting stranded out there, usually classes of preschoolers.

Oh and here’s the same place, bathed in northern lights. There’s also an interesting shed over there, which I once broke into (don’t tell).

Many years ago, as a kid I crawled into this shed through a broken window. On the bottom floor I explored the drying cod heads and in the loft I read through 100 year old love letters.

I did not know that this existed. This is a sculpture in the town of Seltjarnarnes, practically a suburb of Reykjavík. The sculpture’s name is Kvika and was designed by Ólöf Nordal and erected in 2005. It has a constant flow of hot water intended for foot baths or playing kids. Apparently you can cram a person in it as well. This is in within a healthy walking distance of downtown Reykjavík.

This is a little second world war guard tower in Seltjarnarnes, Iceland. Luckily the war never came to Iceland but both the USA and the UK had an air and naval base on the island.

Taken in Seltjarnarnes a town adjacent with Reykjavík. You can walk out to the lighthouse just make sure to get back to the mainland before the tide comes in or you might have to spend a night out in the cold.
