Lotus Evora speeding on a glacier in Icelandic

Lotus Evora on the Langjökull glacier in IcelandA friend of mine helped film a winter tire commercial for Yokohama tires on the Langjökull glacier in Iceland (close to where a giant polar bear was drawn). It is quite interesting to see guys in suits and a fancy Lotus Evora sports car cruising around the glacier.

The commercial was shot last June when the there is little fresh snow on the glacier, but the sun has not yet begun melting the surface into summer slush. A special 400 meter long track of compacted snow was also created a few days in advance and allowed to freeze hard.

Two foreign film company’s one from France and the other from Japan shot the commercial with assistance from the Icelandic film company Pegasus along with Icelandic rescue teams and others who provided glacier transportation.

Glacier tour on Langjökull glacierIt’s no coincidence that they chose the Langjökull glacier. It is very accessible, close to Reykjavik and mostly flat. You can visit Langjökull as well. A few tours come to mind. You can drive across the whole glacier in the giant glacier bus used when filming the commercial. You can also drive on the glacier in a super jeep or if you want to see the glacier’s steeper landscapes, you can sail across the Hvítárvatn glacier lagoon and hike up onto an awesome glacier tongue that descends down into the lagoon (I used to guide that).

It is actually amazing what cars can drive on snow given the right conditions. A few years ago some locals filmed their Porsche 911 Turbo and Cayenne driving to the top of the Skjaldbreiður volcano. There had been extreme frost and the snow was hard as ice. I should know, because the same weekend, I drove a Toyota Avensis up into the snow covered highlands… (Don’t try that at home)
