When I drive around in Iceland I’m always looking around for the old roads. There typically is a trace of an old road somewhere in the vicinity of the more modern roads. Here for example the gravel road on the right is the old road. It had to go up into the mountain side while the new road was built out over the river. The giant river is Iceland’s longest river, Þjórsá. The mountain in the middle is Skarðsfjall.
On a side note I nearly had an accident right there where the cliff goes closest to the road. One of the front wheels fell off the car. Luckily we didn’t lose control of the car though as on one side there was the Þjórsá river and the other side a cliff.
