Anonymous asked: Hey! I absolutely love your blog! But, I'm writing a story, and I want the character to have been from a very, very small village (or even a hamlet!) in Iceland. I can't seem to find many. Skogar is an option (25 inhabitants I believe?) but I'd like a broader field of choice. Thank-you!

Skógar is more like a couple of farms and a hotel.

How about something more isolated? Raufarhöfn and Kópasker are neighboring villages and generally considered the “most out there” towns in Iceland. Interestingly all of Iceland’s internet traffic in the 80’s went through the Kópasker’s elementary school. The principle, Pétur Þorsteinsson, was Iceland’s first internet nerd.

The Grímsey island might also fit. It is right on the arctic circle and arguably one of the most isolated towns in Iceland.

Bolungarvík, with 888 inhabitants is one of the most isolated larger towns in Iceland. It is actually a whole lot less isolated now that the tunnel opened.

Flateyri and Súðavík are two small isolated towns in the Vestfjords. They were devastated by the last century’s greatest natural disaster in Iceland. The towns were buried by avalanches in 1995. 14 people lost their lives in Súðavík and 20 in Flateyri.

Strandir is one of the most isolated inhabited areas in Iceland. There are no towns really, although there is the deserted Djúpavík.

Good luck
